From the borough's tranquil bird sanctuary and reservoir in the north to the pretty Georgian terraces in the west, the Olympic Lea Valley to the east and the Museum alms-houses to the south, Hackney's diverse corners all reveal minefields of history. In its historical haven of non-conformism - just outside the City walls - the lives of some of London's most diverse characters were, and still are, lived: London chronicler and novelist Daniel Defoe, music hall star Marie Lloyd, market gardener Thomas Loddiges, 16th century thatre impressario James Burbage, essayist Charles Lamb, rock star Marc Bolan etc. Walking Hackney is to sense a regeneration of one of London's oldest, edgiest and most diverse quarters.
