London's oldest music hall, dating to 1858, was recently featured on the BBC programme "Restoration". This great survivor once provided a variety of acts from opera singers to can can dancers. Although in a fragile state it now plays host to film crews, concerts and plays. At another thriving, recently restored East London music hall theatre, Charlie Chaplin, Marie Lloyd and Lillie Langtry performed. Today, audiences from across London enjoy a wide range of entertainment, from opera and Shakespeare to alternative comedy and circus. Reminiscence in another charming, 1863 theatre, now a community and fringe venue - or the magnificent crimson and gold tiered theatre where, in the 60s, some of Britain’s best actors attended Joan Littlewood’s theatre workshops and “Oh What a Lovely War” was premiered.
