Christopher Wren has to have been the canniest architect in the history of architecture! He came along just as a new King was enthusing about the latest rage in Continental building styles – neo-classical. Wren supervised the design and build of 51 City churches, all of which emphasise the glory of the human voice, the preacher declaiming on God’s truth – congregational singing still lay in the future. The Victorians (medievalists to the man/woman) pulled down a good thirty of Wren’s ‘Roman temples’. Those that have survived are City of London gems. Yes, there are older churches. Some few escaped the devastation of the Great Fire of London of 1666. This is a tour that shows you where God and Mammon meet.
